چکیده

Hexahedral Mesh Refinement Using an Error Sizing Function Gaurab Paudel Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Master of Science The ability to effectively adapt a mesh is a very important feature of high fidelity finite element modeling. In a finite element analysis, a relatively high node density is desired in areas of the model where there are high error estimates from an initial analysis. Providing a higher node density in such areas improves the accuracy of the model and reduces the computational time compared to having a high node density over the entire model. Node densities can be determined for any model using the sizing functions based on the geometry of the model or the error estimates from the finite element analysis. Robust methods for mesh adaptation using sizing functions are available for refining triangular, tetrahedral, and quadrilateral elements. However, little work has been published for adaptively refining all hexahedral meshes using sizing functions. This thesis describes a new approach to drive hexahedral refinement based upon an error sizing function and a mechanism to compare the sizes of the node after refinement.

Adaptive refinement of all-hexahedral elements for three-dimensional metal forming analysis

In many 3-D forging simulations, the master-grid method or uniform-grid method is adopted as an effect tool for hexahedral element mesh generation, because the method is robust and reliable to construct the intermediate mesh during forging simulation. However, almost equalsized element mesh is employed regardless of the local characteristics of the deforming region. In order to overcome this dr...

Octree-based reasonable-quality hexahedral mesh generation using a new set of refinement templates

An octree-based mesh generation method is proposed to create reasonable-quality, geometry-adapted unstructured hexahedral meshes automatically from triangulated surface models without any sharp geometrical features. A new, easy-to-implement, easy-to-understand set of refinement templates is developed to perform local mesh refinement efficiently even for concave refinement domains without creati...

A Selective Approach to Conformal Refinement of Unstructured Hexahedral Finite Element Meshes

Hexahedral refinement increases the density of an all-hexahedral mesh in a specified region, improving numerical accuracy. Previous research using solely sheet refinement theory made the implementation computationally expensive and unable to effectively handle concave refinement regions and self-intersecting hex sheets. The Selective Approach method is a new procedure that combines two diverse ...

Conformal Refinement of All-Quadrilateral and All-Hexahedral Meshes According to an Anisotropic Metric

Conformal refinement using a shrink and connect strategy known as pillowing or buffer insertion contracts contiguous elements of an all-quadrilateral or an all-hexahedral mesh and reconnects them to locally increase vertex density. Using layers as shrink sets, the present method anisotropically refines an initial mesh to match a prescribed size map expressed as a metric field. An anisotropic sm...
